| Grave of the Fireflies
In the latter part of World War II, a boy and his sister, orphaned when their mother is killed in the firebombing of Tokyo, are left to survive on their own in what remains of civilian life in Japan. As the situation grows progressively worse in the war, things deteriorate proportionally on the homefront. The story follows young Seita and Setsuko as they do their best to survive in the Japanese countryside, battling hunger, prejudice and pride in their own personal battle.
This is one of these movies that make you think of how selfish some people are during wars and how much it tears them apart. It's the most heart wrenching war (animated) movie. What you see is beautiful art and animation and a powerful drive for survival by two little children during World War II. From the very start, you know what's going to happen. You know their fate before the flashback of their life even starts. Seeing them so happy together further stresses your heartstrings when you know what happens in the end. |
